Patio flagstones getting placed

More pics!

Here’s the guys laying out the patio flagstones

It was slow going today but some serious progress was made all around. I think my favorite comment was from Karen “Man, I’m really glad you and I aren’t trying to do that!” Hurray for hiring it out!

BTW: These guys are working out really well. I’ll post pics and contact information for the guys on a post when it’s all said and done.

In the meantime, here’s a pic from where they left off this afternoon:

I tried to take a close-up picture of the color of the flagstones, but the saturation came out all wonky and overly yellow - I waited too long and got sunset light. But they’re really great stones!

Check out the new stairs in progress!

Pretty sweet, huh? And we’ve got a reasonable sized landing with this set! Here’s a pick from the side a little later.

Oracle acquires SleepyCat?!

Tag: Ranting and ReflectionsJoe @ 11:58 am

Holy cow - it’s a big info day. Oracle announced they’ve acquired SleepyCat software. That probably doesn’t mean much to many of you, but the BerkeleyDB product that they make is embedded in ALL sorts of programs and systems. Shoot - there’s a reason: It’s damn good.

The other side of this coin is that SleepyCat had a dual-license policy that enabled a huge number of open source projects to use their stuff. Fortunately, it looks like they’ll be keeping a dual-license policy for the near future. That said, I fully expect that Oracle will crack down on that at some point. Maybe I’m wrong - I hope I am - but my suspicions are definitely up.

Camino!

Tag: Ranting and ReflectionsJoe @ 9:57 am

Very cool! If you’re using a Macintosh, check out Camino, which just went 1.0. I’ve been using it on my laptop for months for those rendering tasks that hadn’t been developed with Safari in mind (but could do Firefox). It uses the (?) same or a similar rendering engine to FireFox, although at this point I expect the Firefox project has moved way ahead. The reason I use it i because it does rendering that is fairly common on the ‘Net and responds a lot faster than Firefox on my iBook.

Snow ?!

Tag: Ranting and ReflectionsJoe @ 9:51 am

We woke up this morning to a scattering of snow! Great white fluffy flakes were drifting down from the sky at 7am this morning, covering everything in site. Now this is Seattle, so the vast majority of it is already gone.

Great big chunks of stone are going in to be our new steps today too. We thought maybe the snow would deter the fellows installing, but they were here when we got back from a coffee shop run. I think they had set the first large base stone. You can already tell that it is going to be a huge improvement over the poured cement stairs when they’re done. It’s going to look awesome!

Lake Quinault

Tag: Ranting and ReflectionsJoe @ 10:39 pm

I picked the perfect weekend this winter to head out to Lake Quinault. It was beautiful on the drive out there (Friday afternoon).

Saturday turned into a slightly overcast, but lovely and warm day walking around the woods on the outskirts of the Quinault Rainforest. We didn’t even get up early, but when we arrived at the trail head on the north side of the lake, we disturbed a herd of Elk, who watched us carefully. They didn’t spook - just sort of quietly moved in towards the deeper forest as we headed towards them on the trail. Incredible things - so quiet. That evening we just took it easy in the lodge (it’s a really cool old-style park service lodge) and I passed out for a good few hours sitting in a monstrous leather chair near the fireplace.

Today was brighter - with more sunshine, and we took our sweet ole time coming home. We got back into town around 4:30pm after taking the Bremerton ferry from the other side of the sound. I’m sure it would have been faster to drive on around (we waited an hour at Bremerton for the ferry), but that time relaxing and not driving is SO worth it to me. I used to be better at long road trips, but I drive so infrequently now that they’re getting to be a real pain.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take the camera with me - so there aren’t any pics to share. The elk herd would’ve been awesome to show off. Maybe next time.

Moving on…

Tag: Ranting and ReflectionsJoe @ 10:40 pm

Today was my last day at DocuSign. They gave me a wonderful send off, but all the while it is not quite feeling real. I think a few days down the road it’ll kick in and get more concrete for me, but right now it just feels like a good night out drinking a few beers with friends.

Welcome to the new place…

Tag: Geekstuff, Ranting and ReflectionsJoe @ 7:40 pm

Welcome to the new place - I’ve (yes, finally) updated my blogging software. The primary hope is to re-enable comments without getting completely inundated by the nasty buggers. We’ll just play it out and see how it goes.

There are all sorts of new features built in to WordPress - or maybe they’re not so new, and I’ve just been using old code for ages and ages. I did import some back entries - maybe I’ll import more. I have entries going back to 2002 online (and more on local storage), but reimporting all those entries just didn’t seem to make all that much sense. The archives are still there in their original location for any poor fool who wants to dive into them. Yeah - and Google should take care of the rest…
